There are several different mattress construction types commonly available in the market. Each type offers unique characteristics and features to cater to different sleep preferences and needs. Here are some of the most common mattress construction types:

  1. Innerspring Mattress: This type of mattress features a core support system made up of steel coils or springs. The coils provide bounce, support, and good airflow. The comfort layer on top may include foam or other materials for added cushioning. There are several different coil systems available. Please see our other blog post “Coil Systems” for an in depth description of each type.
  2. Memory Foam Mattress: Memory foam mattresses are constructed using layers of memory foam, which is a viscoelastic material. Memory foam contours to the body, relieving pressure points and providing excellent motion isolation. It is known for its ability to conform to the shape of the sleeper. Some all foam mattresses, mostly inexpensive models, tend to sleep warm. It’s important to choose a quality memory foam mattress that will integrate phase change material and ventilation systems in order to avoid this pitfall.
  3. Latex Mattress: Latex mattresses are made from natural or synthetic latex foam. They offer a responsive and bouncy feel while providing good pressure relief. Latex is also known for its durability, breathability, and hypoallergenic properties.
  4. Hybrid Mattress: Hybrid mattresses are the best of both worlds! These mattresses combine multiple materials, typically a layer of innerspring coils with layers of foam or latex. The goal is to combine the benefits of each material, such as the support of coils and the pressure relief of foam or latex.
  5. Pillow-top Mattress: A pillow-top mattress has an additional layer of padding sewn onto the top surface, providing extra cushioning and a plush feel. The pillow-top layer can be made of foam, fiberfill, or a combination of materials.
  6. Euro-top Mattress: Similar to a pillow-top mattress, a euro-top mattress has an extra layer of padding. However, the padding is sewn more flush with the edges, resulting in a neater appearance compared to a pillow-top.
  7. Adjustable Air Mattress: Adjustable air mattresses use chambers filled with air, allowing you to adjust the firmness level to your preference. Some models even offer dual chambers, allowing each side of the bed to have a different firmness level. Think of these products as an elevated air mattress.
  8. Waterbed: Waterbeds have a water-filled chamber as the primary support system. They can provide a unique floating sensation and can be adjusted for temperature control.
  9. Gel Mattress: Gel mattresses incorporate gel-infused foam or gel layers to enhance cooling and temperature regulation. The gel helps dissipate heat and can provide a cooler sleeping surface compared to traditional foam mattresses.
